An educational model that emphasizes direct instruction in basic skills for students that have fallen behind academically.

Behavior Modification
Techniques used to change behavior by applying both educational and psychological interventions.

Behavior Observation Audiometry
A method of hearing assessment in which an infant’s reactions to sounds are observed.

Behavioral Contract
A written contract between a teacher or administrator and a student that specifies behavioral objectives, the conditions under which those objectives will be met, the criteria used to evaluate the objectives, and the consequences and rewards associated with those objectives.

Behavioral Disorder
A disability characterized by behavior that adversely affects educational performance.

Bilingual
The ability to speak two languages.

Bilingual Special Education
The use of a child’s dominant/native language (other than english) in order to provide special education services.

Binocular Fusion
The blending of separate images from each eye into a single meaningful image.

Binocular Vision
Vision using both eyes working together to perceive a single image.

Biofeedback
The technique of making unconscious or involuntary bodily processes (i.e. heartbeats, brainwaves, etc.) perceptible to the senses by the use of an oscilloscope in order to manipulate them by conscious mental control.

Blind
Having no vision or only light perception.

Body Image
The concept and awareness of one’s own body as it relates to space, movement, and other objects.

Braille
A system of writing letters, numbers, and symbols with a combination of six raised dots for the purpose of communicating written media to the blind.

Brain-Based Learning
Research-based educational approach that emphasizes the connection between specific teaching strategies and the brain’s functional response.

Brain Damage
Any actual structural damage on brain tissue due to any cause.
